Tickets to the Awards Gala

Tickets are now on sale for the 31st annual National Magazine Awards gala, which will be held June 6 at the Carlu in Toronto. Doors open at 5:30pm for dinner along with a wine reception courtesy of CDS Global. The awards presentation will commence at 7:30pm, followed by dessert and cash bar from 9pm till late. Come join the Canadian magazine industry as we celebrate the very best work from writers, illustrators, photographers, editors and art directors.
Tickets may be purchased for table seats in the main Concert Hall or for seats in the Balcony Theatre. All tickets include a station-style dinner in the Grand Foyer (vegetarian options will be available), where all of the nominated work will be on display. Table seats in the Concert Hall include snacks and the option to purchase wine and other drinks. Drinks are not permitted in the Balcony Theatre. Throughout the evening the adjoining Round Room will remain open for all guests, with a cash bar and closed-circuit monitors showcasing the awards presentation.

And the Nominees Are...
The National Magazine Awards Foundation (NMAF) announced the nominations for the 31st annual National Magazine Awards on Tuesday, 29 April 2008 at a special reception at Restaurant Wilson in Montreal.

The three finalists for the coveted award Magazine of the Year are L’actualité, Maisonneuve and Toronto Life.
Individually, writers John Lorinc, Ray Ford, Duncan Hood and Tabatha Southey received 3 nominations each. Photographers Benoit Aquin, Mario Miotti and Liam Sharp, and Illustrators Sam Weber, Graham Roumieu and Christian Northeast, each received at least 2 nominations.
The NMAF’s third annual award for Best Student Writer goes to Julia Belluz for her article “I” that appeared in the Ryerson Review of Journalism. Julia's article is also nominated in the Profiles category. Honourable Mention goes to Dan Yates and Meena Nallainathan.
The winner of this year’s award for
Best New Magazine Writer is
Patrick White, for an article entitled “Red Rush” that appeared in
The Walrus (April 2007). The same article is also nominated for an award in the category Science, Technology the Environment.
The NMAF’s most prestigious individual prize since its inception in 1990 is the Foundation Award for Outstanding Achievement. This year the NMAF is honoured to name Charles Oberdorf as the recipient for his exceptional contributions to the Canadian magazine community.
From more than 2,100 individual entries nationwide, the NMAF’s 200 judges nominated a total of 303 submissions in 76 different Canadian magazines for awards in 39 categories. The Gold, Silver and Honourable Mention awards will be announced in Toronto on June 6. See the full list of nominations here.
