And the Winners are...

The National Magazine Awards Foundation (NMAF) announced the winners of the 31st annual National Magazine Awards at the Carlu in Toronto on June 6, 2008.

Toronto Life won the coveted Magazine of the Year award, given to the magazine that most consistently engages, surprises, and serves the needs of its readers.

 

The Walrus led all winners with 6 Gold and 4 Silver awards from 37 nominations. Toronto Life, in addition to winning Magazine of the Year, won 4 Gold and 2 Silver awards. Other multiple winners included Report on Business and L’actualité (each with 3 Gold and 1 Silver), explore (2 Gold, 5 Silver), Maclean’s (2 Gold, 3 Silver), Maisonneuve (2 Gold, 2 Silver), More (2 Gold, 1 Silver) and Vancouver Magazine (2 Gold).

 

Highlights of the individual awards included the award for Best Magazine Cover going to Maisonneuve (Anna Minzhulina, Art Director), while unlimited won the award for Best Art Direction for an Entire Issue (Malcolm Brown, Art Director). Report on Business (Gary Salewicz, Editor) won Gold in the categories Editorial Package and Words & Pictures, while Outdoor Canada (Patrick Walsh, Editor) won for Editorial Packaging for a Single Service Article, which was a new category this year. Malahat Review took Gold and Silver in the Poetry category.

 

Writer Tadzio Richards won a Gold Award (Investigative Reporting) and a Silver (Science, Technology & the Environment) for his article “Burning Water” in Maisonneuve. Ellen Vanstone won a Gold award (Personal Journalism) and a Silver (Humour) for her article “Home Sweet Hell-Hole” (Toronto Life). Geoff Powter won a Gold and a Silver in the category Sports & Recreation for two different articles in explore. Pierre Fortin (L’actualité) won Gold for the second time in the Columns category. Marci McDonald won her seventh Gold award, this year in Society, while Gerald Hannon won his fifth Gold, this year in a new category called Best Short Feature.

Other Gold awards went to Chatelaine, FASHION, Malahat Review, Queen’s Quarterly, ON Nature and unlimited.

 

In the special categories, the winner of this year’s award for Best New Magazine Writer is Patrick White, for his article “Red Rush” in The Walrus magazine. Patrick also won Honourable Mention for this article in Science, Technology & the Environment.

 

Julia Belluz won the 3rd annual Best Student Writer award for her article “I” in the Ryerson Review of Journalism. The same article also won Julia a Silver in Profiles.

 

The NMAF presented Charles Oberdorf with the prestigious Foundation Award for Outstanding Achievement.

 

The 31st annual National Magazine Awards gala recognized excellence in Canadian magazine journalism for the year 2007. This year the NMAF received more than 2100 submissions from nearly 200 magazines across Canada, and relied on over 200 volunteer judges to evaluate the work in 39 categories. 

 

More than 600 guests were in attendance as the NMAF presented Gold, Silver and Honourable Mention awards in 39 written, visual, integrated and special categories. 76 different magazines from across Canada comprised the more than 300 total nominations this year. 

 

Gold winners receive $1000. Silver winners receive $500.
