2009 WMA Curriculum and Instructor Notes
* WMA 2010 - the 28th Annual Western Magazine Awards
The Board of the Western Magazine Awards Foundation
is delaying the launch of the 2010 WMAs until May. This means that winners will be announced and celebrated
in early fall rather than in June.
There are two reasons for this delay.
1. Our federal funding, through the now-defunct Canada Magazine Fund, will be offered under a program of the
newly created Canada Periodical Fund. The details of the program (the Business Innovation component), and the
application forms, are not yet available. The WMAF relies on federal funding to assist with project expenses,
which allows us to keep WMA entry fees reasonable and the prize money untouched. We will not receive approval
for funding until later in the year, thus the delay.
2. For our Vancouver-based entrants, the Olympics are causing numerous delays. Most magazine staffs
will have irregular work schedules, and couriers will have trouble navigating the city. Our typical call for
entries and deadline for entries occurs during the Olympics, and we’re concerned about the logistics of
operating our competition during this period.
From now until May a volunteer will staff the office as needed. We will answer emails within a week of
receipt. And most importantly, we will return to a spring WMAs in 2011.
Thank you for your patience and understanding, and we look forward to an exciting competition beginning in
May.
