Spring 2009 Internships for Students
The National Magazine Awards Foundation offers a paid internship to journalism students and
students pursuing a career in Canadian magazine publishing. The internship lasts from January 5, 2009 until
the awards gala on June 5, 2009. See below for more details.
The National Magazine Awards Foundation also participates in the externship placement program
for students in the program of Hospitality & Tourism at George Brown College. The externship position is
unpaid and exists in two 7-week sessions, one in Jan-Feb and one in Mar-Apr. Please apply via George Brown's

About the Magazine Internship (paid)
Time: January 5 – June 5, 2009
Hours: 5-8 hours per week on average, not to exceed 15 hours in any week. Hours
are mostly flexible and office work is generally not required except during peak times. Peak times are Jan
12-26, mid-March, late April, and the 3 weeks leading up to the awards gala.
Rewards: A $1,000 bursary, plus two complimentary tickets to the 32nd annual National
Magazine Awards gala on June 5, 2009.
Description:
A great opportunity to work behind the scenes of the Canadian magazine industry through one
of its most important and celebrated institutions – the National Magazine Awards.
Working with the NMAF Communications Manager, your tasks will include liaising with magazines
and individual applicants to the NMAs, verifying and organizing submissions, fact checking and copy editing
NMA promotional material, compiling statistics and industry research as needed, assisting with the
development of creative ideas for the NMA gala, creating a nominees’ exhibition for the NMA gala, assisting
with media outreach and advertising, and others tasks that arise.
Requirements:
Applicants must be well-motivated, independent workers with a healthy respect for deadlines
and a passion for magazines. You must be available at our “peak” times listed above.
Preference will be given to applicants in the magazine stream of journalism and/or those who
demonstrate a strong interest in exploring the magazine industry professionally. Knowledge of French is an
asset.
